Hello, I'm Natalie.
As a mother of a child who struggled with math, I understand how heartbreaking it can be when your child is crying and frustrated, embarrassed to not be able to successfully complete their math homework no matter how hard they try. My daughter was a bright and curious child in so many areas, but when it came to math,
she hit a wall.
It all started in the middle of her second grade math year, when math got more complicated and multiplication came on the scene. It continued to spiral downward through third and fourth grade math. She worked hard, had a great attitude, and yet, just didn't get it. Every day was frustration and tears. Eventually she hated math, didn't want to do it, and told me she was dumb at math. As a parent, I knew I had to do something to help her, but I didn't know where to start.
I began to research different approaches to teaching math and discovered that traditional methods may not work for every child. We started adding in a wide variety of manipulatives and games, and switching up math resources almost monthly looking for the ones that would work best for her. Once we found resources and strategies that worked for her unique strengths, she made steady improvement.
As we progressed, I realized that it was important to be patient and not rush the learning process. Even though we had programs in place that worked well for her learning style and strengths, math would still take time for her to master. I studied brain development and grew in my understanding that I could have faith in her brain to continue to develop in ways that would facilitate her understanding of abstract math concepts.
I learned to let go of the comparison game, and focus my attention on making sure that she was getting the help she needed in a way that was meaningful to her, believing that she was absolutely on the right schedule for her brain and development.
But perhaps the most important thing we did was to focus on my daughter's strengths, not just her challenges. Once we started hooking what was hard for her onto a skill that was her strength, things really started clicking for her.
She is an auditory and kinesthetic learner, so we eliminated as much visual clutter as possible, and did is much math orally as we could, preferably while moving. She loves art and story telling, so we drew math problems and told stories about them. We made up stories to help us remember multi-step processes. Right now she is a gifted writer, and she makes detailed math notes of each lesson so that she can gain understanding.
Finding your child's unique strengths and then using those areas to pave a successful path into more difficult materials will unlock doors of resistance and open up their minds to new learning.
The victory was hard-won, but worth it. My daughter met her math goals and earned awards and recognition in our education community for her effort. She grew in confidence and skill, improving her grades and working on pace for her age. She has taken regular math and science requirements in high school, earning A's in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Chemistry.
She hasn't needed my help with math since 8th grade, and she knows how to study effectively (for her brain) and persistently so she can succeed in math today and in the future. I am incredibly proud of her and grateful for the lessons we learned together.
